The bull as an animal is strangely hardwired in its brain to not attack, react or recognize anything below a certain height as an enemy. In metaphor, This is analogy of how companies fail. . . . Big business find it hard to react, as they usually do not see these smaller business coming. In essence don't be a bull, learn to adapt and take shape according to the type of competition. Guerrila strategy is about taking pride in your position, enjoying your small size and leveraging on it. . . A razor blade is very sharp but it can't cut a tree the same way an axe can't cut your hair. Everything and everyone has their own role so never look down on anyone except off course you want to admire their shoes! . . . As a small business, you don’t go head to head with a bigger brand, instead you take advantage of their size which makes them slow and uneasy to sight, focus deeply or respond swiftly. Another thing to do is to look at their entire maker scope and then take a smaller but uncontested market size of that large space. And then you concentrate your forces there. Its how terrorists attack their nations ( take a smaller part of the map and concentrate on that space e.g Biko Haram, not going head to head with the Nigerian Army, but hiding in a small neglected part of the north, around Sambisa and then attacking consistently from and around there). For example, a small departmental store can decide to build small supermarkets around every big Shoprite but with better convenience in check out (bearing in mind that parking space and check out time from the counters of Shoprite is irritatingly slow). . . . In today’s business world it’s hard to find good people, but harder to keep them. The hardest part even, is making them to stay long enough for you to build growth, vision and maybe your succession. It’s the founder and CEO’s dilemma. You have to create a special set out of your entire lot for this. You have to identify and build intentionally what you desire. That set to build succession with require that out of your many, that they the most highly competent (highflyers) and loyal ones. That intersection is mainly personality based. It starts from identifying those fit enough to be called highflyers. In earmarking a team member(s) for takeover, loyalty can be relative. Most highflyers are not loyal to the brand, but loyal to their needs that have to do with the brand. Just like the law of diminishing returns, as time goes in it, retention of that loyalty and commitment drops. It is best to identify high flyers with the right personality and SKA (Skill, Knowledge and Ability) to build succession with. It can’t be everyone but a subset of your perfect fit (those with competence, leadership traits and loyalty). When you identify those earmarked, communicate it to them. We all need consultants.
