Ｐｅｒｓｐｅｃｔｉｖｅ I had just opened my sleepy eyes after a long night on the thirteen hour (😱) train ride between Cairo & Aswan when I saw two men framed by the dawn light. The contrast! The day was just breaking, and one had flung himself fearlessly out the door to soak in every part of it. Who can explain the sensation of dawn? When the air is bursting with the mintiest flavors of dew & silver linings, when the pink colors filling the sky pour their warmth inside you, when the silence is so intense all your senses start throbbing to their sharpest beat. It may be the quietest part of the day yet dawn tickles your whole being with excitement. And that boy must have known such moments don’t necessarily repeat themselves in life. To sashay down the entire Nile River from north to south at full speed and live a thousand different lives with each glimpse into ancient villages or with each ephemeral encounter with a passenger on the train. Nice to meet you, ma’a salama, godspeed. The other man was not looking out the window. Quietly tuned in to his phone, idly stretching out his legs, he rode with his back to his destination. A matter of perspective. Perhaps he preferred to merely coexist with the tumultuous beauty taking place outside. Perhaps he didn’t want to know and come to need such lyricisms. Ｆｉｒｅ ａｎｄ Ｗａｔｅｒ I met these two on a crowded sofa sometime between an Ngor house party and an Electrafrique. He was a force of nature that could not be denied and she the calm of his eye. Their earthly energy took you right in, though you had to be real and ready for anything. Over the months, lockdown or no lockdown you would run into this iconic duo everywhere in Dakar, firing up the nightlife or drawing opposite worlds of people together at the beach, a thousand plans buzzing at once. But wherever they went, the way he had her back and asserted her as his Queen was not a sight to miss. 👑 The protector and the soothing advisor. A formidable combination of power and depth. Fire and Water. Just what the other needs. We took these photos just before one of Dakar's 8pm curfews. She was 5 months pregnant, and the international borders were just shutting. They were trying to get themselves to France before it would be too late to fly.
