Caption:USA, Illinois, Chicago, 2012, Woodlawn Mental Health Closing protest

In ‘Chi-Raq’ more young people have died in the past five years than in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. There still is not one trauma unit anywhere on the South Side, despite the fact that the city leads the country in the number of homicides, with the majority occurring south of the Loop. As often follows with arrests, incarceration tends to ensue. As a result, more than 100,000 people go through the doors of Chicago’s Cook County Jail each year. However, many of these young men and women are blind to how the city’s methodical and systematic control of land, divides their neighborhoods into war zones. This, results in wars with each other, in a seemingly endless loop of “survival”.

Caption: Quilombo Tapaje, Pará State, Brazil - January, 2012: Inhabitants of the town holding candles in the shore of the river during a local celebration. For centuries the inhabitants of the Quilombo of Tapaje remained hidden in the Amazon forest to escape the slavery system. Today, several infrastructure megaprojects in the Amazon basin are transforming the traditional ways of life of these communities while they are also creating irreversible effects on the fragile forest environment.

The Interoceanic Highway is the first road that crosses South America from East to West; from the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil to the Pacific Ocean in Peru, providing Brazil a faster way to transport its vast natural resources to the Asian market.
During the 1970´s, Brazil also tried to cross the continent with the TransAmazonian Highway. The project failed and migrant families, that were building the road, got stuck in the middle of nowhere.
The construction of both Highways has a severe impact on the fragile rainforest environment, such as deforestation, illegal hunting and fishing, massive crops for monocultures and pasture lands, illegal mining, pollution, soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. It is also affecting the local populations, introducing the drug and arms trafficking into the region, slaving underemployment and violence, and also damaging the life of ancestral indigenous communities.

A new book by @kadirvanlohuizen "After Us the Deluge" visualizes the impact of rising sea levels on communities around the world. He traveled to Greenland, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Panama, and more! You can pre-order his book and learn more in the NOOR shop— link in bio! Caption: Indonesia, Jakarta, 24 December 2018 A newly build sea wall is not very effective. Pluit is an area in the north of Jakarta and is particularly vulnerable for sea level rise and the sinking of the city. The city is fortifying the area with a new sea wall. Until now millions of people are being protected by a small wall. Jakarta is facing a rising sea level, but moreover, it’s sinking. Due to groundwater extraction, used by many high rises, northern Jakarta sinks about 25 centimeters a year, central Jakarta a bit less, but still considerable. If nothing happens the greatest part of Jakarta will be underwater by 2050. A masterplan to protect Jakarta against the rising sea level has been put to a halt. The government is considering to move Jakarta. Kadir van Lohuizen / NOOR @nikoneurope #nikonambassador ------------
