Today is the International Day of the restorers and conservators, and I want to pay tribute to one of the best I’ve had the pleasure to work with: Teresa López-Obregón. She is the restorer of the Proyecto Qubbet el-Hawa, and is an impressive professional who has done wonders to the many finds, some more damaged than others, discovered by the Spanish team. Here she is working with the wooden lid of a small box that has a recumbent Anubis on it, the jackal god of embalming. The owner of this box is unknown, even though cursive hieroglyphs inscribed on it are still preserved, it is dated to the Late Period and was found in the inner chamber of tomb QH33, the so-called C24, between the coffins of Hor-Wdjat and Psametik. @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2019). #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #egypt #necropolis #ancientegypt #egyptiantomb #inthefield #insidethetomb #restorer #internationalrestorerandconservatorday #diainternacionaldelrestauradorconservador #professional #specialistatwork #artefact #artifacts #ancientartifacts #box #hieroglyphs #egyptiangods #anubis #jackal #jackalgod #embalming #godofembalming #preservingthepast #archaeoinstagram #photography #archaeologicalphotography #portrait

Dr Dina Serova is the specialist in epigraphy of The Middle Kingdom Theban Project working in the inscription of the sarcophagus of the vizier Ipi (TT315). The sarcophagus, still in situ in the tomb, was built under the pavement of the chamber to avoid the destruction and stealing of the corpse of Amenemhat I vizier. Since 2017 she is studying the texts written in the inner walls of the sarcophagus. Due to the fact that this sarcophagus was exposed to fire, a deliberate destruction and it was also reused in antiquity, many important bits of the texts are nowadays impossible to read (hence, the restorers of the team are also working on it). However, preliminary studies done by Dina identified its writing as cursive hieroglyphs, and the funerary texts written in its inner walls (even the bottom one!) are the typical formulas of The Pyramid texts. @thebanproject (UAH, season 2018). #middlekingdomthebanproject #luxor #egypt #deirelbahari #egyptiantomb #middlekingdom #amenemhati #pharaoh #vizier #thebannecropolis #egyptiantomb #sarcophagus #egyptiansarcophagus #inthefield #insidethetomb #egyptology #epigraphy #hieroglyphs #ancienttexts #funerarytexts #pyramidtexts #pyramid #photography #nikon #nikond750 #portraitphotography #portrait #specialistatwork #environmentalportrait #archaeologicalphotography #archaeoinstagram

When visiting the tomb where the anthropologist team of the Proyecto Qubbet el-Hawa works, one always finds them gathered at a table full of hundreds of bones and skulls. They study all the human remains found by the archaeologists of the team in the different areas where the project works in the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa. Here, Prof Dr Miguel Botella is measuring the skull of an individual found in tomb QH35n. @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2019) #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #egypt #ancientegypt #egyptiantomb #inthefield #egyptology #archaeology #anthropology #anthropologist #ancientegyptian #humanremains #bones #skull #skullsmile #femur #studyingthepast #studyingancientpeople #ancientpeople #photography #portrait #portraitphotography #specialistatwork #beard #archaeophoto #archaeoinstagram #archaeologicalphotography #nikon #nikond750

In the ceramology lab located just at the entrance of QH33, one can usually find images like this one: a jigsaw puzzle made out of hundreds of pottery sherds in the table, and the specialists trying to solve it. Here, PhD candidate and archaeologist Desirée Pérez emptied the boxes with the pottery fragments found in the shaft that leads to C24, the inner chamber of this tomb of an unknown owner. The aim of spreading all those sherds over the table is to be able to rebuild those broken pottery vases, at least the profile (ring, neck, body, base) if it’s not possible to reassemble the whole artifact. Then the ceramologist team would start the drawing and study of the most significant ones. In this case, Desirée selects those fragments with features that can help to determine the chronology to which it belongs, such as the shape or its decorative motives, and she is glueing together fragments of a Middle Kingdom jar. @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2019). #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #ancientegypt #egyptiantomb #middlekingdom #egyptology #archaeology #ceramology #phdlife #inthefield #jigsaw #jigsawpuzzle #patience #pottery #potterysherds #reassemblingthepast #studyingthepast #specialistatwork #culturalheritage #archaeologicalsite #ancientartefacts #ancientartifacts #archaeologicalphotography #nikon #nikond750 #nikkor8_15mm #fisheyelens #nikonistas #archaeoinstagram

In 2017, the Qubbet el-Hawa team started excavating the inner chamber of QH33 they named C24. In this chamber several artefacts dating from the Middle Kingdom until the Late Period were found. Among them, two Late Period coffins belonging to Pafii and Hor-Wdjat, which were not in the best condition due to termites (check my post of December the 10th to see how the lifted Hor-Wdjat’s coffin up from a 15m shaft!). When the coffins were safe and sound out of the chamber, they were rapidly taken to the restoration lab located within QH33, to preserve as much as possible the beautiful decoration and the cursive hieroglyph texts written on them, so the epigraphists of the team could study them. In the first picture you can see restorer Sara Tapia carefully working on the feet of Pafii’s coffin, can you recognize the winged goddess depicted on it? Restorers put the so-called Japanese paper on it to preserve it, but if you swipe the picture, in the second one you will see how part of the interior of C24 looked like in 2017, with two mummies (one of them still had a beautiful beaded funerary mask on), and on the right of the picture, the bottom part of Pafii’s coffin... can you recognize the goddess now? 😊 @qubbetelhawa (UJA, seasons 2019 and 2017) #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #egypt #ancientegypt #egyptiantomb #egyptiancoffin #lateperiod #egyptiangoddess #isis #wdjat #hieroglyphs #hieroglyph #inthefield #insidethetomb #funerarymask #mummy #egyptianmummy #restoration #preservingthepast #archaeology #egyptology #archaeologylife #photography #archaeologicalphotography #nikon #nikond750 #portrait #portraitphotography #specialistatwork

In 2017, when the team of the Midde Kingdom Theban Project was excavating in Ipi’s courtyard(TT315), they could not expect the amazing find they discovered: the embalming cachette of Amenemhat I’s vizier, Ipi! 57 jars, hundreds of natron bags and pieces of linen cloth (some of them of more than 9 meters long!), and the most fascinating of all: a human heart mummified. The following season, in 2018, Prof Dr Salima Ikram (in the picture), a worldwide renowned mummification expert, joined -again- the team to study those finds. Here she examines the inventory bags containing the natron bags of the embalming cachette. She weights them with the help of a small scale and then introduces all the data in her computer. This discovery made by the MKTP is a huge step to learn more about the mummification process carried out by the ancient Egyptians. @thebanproject (UAH, season 2018). #middlekingdomthebanproject #luxor #deirelbahari #thebannecropolis #thebantomb #egyptology #archaeology #embalmingcachette #natronbag #mummification #mummificationexpert #salimaikram #amenemhati #pharaoh #middlekingdom #portrait #portraitphotography #specialistatwork #photography #bnwphotography #nikon #nikond750 #archaeoinstagram #archaeologicalphotography

The fields and the desert... fertility and death. Horus view of the west bank fields and the Theban necropolis. You can recognize the Ramesseum in the foreground, the mortuary temple of Ramesses II, and Asasif and Deir el-Bahari in the background, where stand the mortuary temples of Mentuhotep II and Hatshepsut, surrounded by many officials’ tombs. In some of them, both in Asasif and Deir el-Bahari, I have the privilege to work with the @thebanproject (MKTP). While working with them, in 2018, I had one of the best experiences ever, which was to fly over the west bank in a hot-air balloon, busy with two cameras in hand and absolutely mesmerized with the impressive views of the area from the sky. Since drones are not allowed, it was the only way to shoot aerial pictures of the archaeological site where the Middle Kingdom Theban Project works. If you haven’t flown in a hot air balloon in Egypt before, is an experience I strongly recommend if you go to Luxor! #egypt #luxor #westbank #ancientegypt #thebannecropolis #egyptiantomb #egyptiantemple #ramesseum #ramessesii #mentuhotepii #hatshepsut #asasif #deirelbahari #desert #fertilityanddeath #hotairballon #mesmerizingview #birdview #landscapephotography #airphotography #nikon #nikond750 #fisheyelens #fisheyephotography #nikkor8_15mm #archaeologicalphotography #archaeologicalsite #archaeologicalphotographer #nikonphotography #archaeoinstagram

Ever wondered how to lift a more than two thousand years old Egyptian coffin up from a 15 meters deep shaft? It is one of the most memorable, mind-blowing and inspiring moments I’ve ever lived. A tremendous team effort in a task that involved many members of the team and cost -fortunately- more sweat than tears because the result was a complete success. This Late Period coffin of Hor-Wdjat, found in the inner chamber of tomb QH33, was protected and secured by the restoration team, put on a wooden board, secured with harnesses and climbing ropes; and with the help of a crane and the guidance of archaeologist Juan Luis Martínez throughout the whole shaft, and the help of director Alejandro Jiménez and the epigraphist Antonio Morales at the top, it was safely taken out and ready to go to the restoration lab inside QH33 to keep preserving it for the specialists to study it. I imagine when an emergency team needs to rescue someone... this is more or less how it feels like! @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2016) #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #ancientegypt #egyptiantomb #egyptiancoffin #lateperiod #memorablemoments #mindblowingexperience #teameffort #harness #climbingrope #shaft #inthedeep #sweatandtears #success #science #egyptology #archaeology #whathappensinthefield #archaeologicalsite #archaeologicalphotography #insidethetomb #photography #nikon #nikond750 #nikonohotography #lifeofaphotographer #throwbacpic #archaeoinstagram

At the edge of the cliff, Bilal separates the finds sieved from tomb QH32 and puts them in buckets according to their material: stone, bones, textile, cartonnage, faience, wood, etc... these finds will be later given an inventory number and will be saved carefully so the specialist in each field can study them and learn more about this fascinating civilization. @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2019) #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #egypt #ancientegypt #egyptiantomb #archaeology #archaeologylife #digsite #digging #egyptianarchaeology #archaeologicalsite #inthefield #separatingfinds #attheedgeofthecliff #underthesun #ancientartifacts #ancientfinds #science #studyingthepast #egyptiancivilization #desert #egyptiandesert #photography #nikon #nikond750 #archaeologicalphotography #picoftheday #lifeofaphotographer #archaeoinstagram

Pottery vessels and sherds are the most common find in any archaeological site, and a very important item to study an ancient civilization. The info one can gather with such finds is wide: it is a cultural indicator that gives information about the society which produced it, about its daily life, its technology and stylistic development, its economic development and trading networks, its funerary rituals and it also works as a chronological indicator. Drawing pottery with a view... that’s how privileged the Qubbet el-Hawa team of ceramologists is. @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2019). #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #egypt #ancientegypt #necropolis #ancientsite #archaeologicalsite #egyptiantomb #egyptology #ceramology #potteryvessels #potterysherds #ancientfinds #measuringpottery #drawingpottery #profiler #workwithaview #nileriver #nile #egyptianlandscape #desert #inthefield #science #photography #hands #fineartphotography #archaeologicalphotography #nikon #nikond750

What happens in tomb QH33, stays in tomb QH33... or not! Here you have a glimpse of the interior of tomb QH33, whose owner is unknown, where the @qubbetelhawa has been working since 2008. Here it was where all started. Six columns separate the areas of work, with different specialists: epigraphists, a carpologist, an anthracologist, ceramologists, draughtsmen, a 3D specialist and especially the restorers of the team (as here it is located the main restoration lab of the project), work inside this tomb, that works also as a magazine to save the ancient artifacts found during the archaeological works inside and outside the tomb. Slide and you will see Shiri Han, the restorator in training of the MSA, working in the restoration and conservation of a wooden coffin found in the inner chamber of QH33, with some of its colorful decoration still preserved. One of the things I like the most about photographing inside an ancient Egyptian tomb, is that I can do more lowkey pictures and embrace the dark side, in order to give more drama to the pics I am making (because we are actively making art, not just passively taking pictures, as @tetisheriegyptology well pointed out 😉), emphasizing some aspects of the subject that I am photographing: the texture of the skin, the hands, etc... Such as in this example of a picture of Egyptologist Dr Antonio Morales, epigraphist of the Proyecto Qubbet el-Hawa and director of The Middle Kingdom Theban Project (@thebanproject), where you can see him studying some of the 52 tiny pottery vessels, with hieratic inscription, that appeared during the archaeological works in the inner chamber of tomb QH33. @qubbetelhawa (season 2019, UJA). #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #egypt #ancientegypt #necropolis #middlekingdom #egyptiantomb #inthefield #insidethetomb #egyptology #egyptologist #epigraphist #hieratic #hieraticinscription #ancient #ancientwriting #pottery #science #adventure #studyingthepast #photography #archaeologicalphotography #portrait #portraitphotography #lowkey #darkside #lightandshadow #nikon #nikond750

Codirector Dr Jose Alba together with Mahmoud Abu Marh, clean de surface of the inner chamber in tomb QH32. Finds are being distributed in the buckets depending on the material: pottery, bones, wood, textile, etc... those are afterwards sieved (in case any tiny find was misplaced) and registered and placed in a bag with the inventory number given to it. The conditions working in the inner room of QH32 are difficult, located 10 meters below ground level, the heat and the mummy dust doesn’t make it any easier to do the job and excavate in there, thus the masks and a break to breath some proper air outside at least every hour. There were so many mummy bandages in this room, that I believe that it can be said, without exaggerating, that more than 100 big bags were filled with only the mummy bandages found in it! @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2019) #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #aswan #egypt #ancientegypt #necropolis #middlekingdom #egyptiantomb #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeologylife #insidethetomb #diglife #archaeologicalsite #pottery #bones #ancienttextiles #mummybandages #mummy #ancientfinds #photography #archaeologicalphotography #nikon #nikond750 #lifeofaphotographer #difficultconditions #rewardingjob #throwbackpic

Close to the cliff side, right in front of tomb QH34bb, a skull started to emerge from the sand, carefully cleared out by the archaeologist Vicente Barba. Little did he know at that moment that he was just about to come across an inimaginable find. Huge jaws, teeth of 4-5cm... it was a cocrodile! And as he continued excavating the area, helped by Shami and Bilal, more skulls started to appear. Not 2 or 3 but 11!! cocodriles were found, one of them perfectly mummified, during the past season in Qubbet el-Hawa, and you can learn more about this absolutely spectacular discovery, one of its kind in this necropolis, in the second season of the @natgeo series “Lost treasures of Egypt” (https://youtu.be/9AHWBMmgFaQ). @qubbetelhawa (UJA, season 2019). #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #egypt #aswan #ancientegypt #egyptiantomb #egyptology #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeologylife #inthefield #discovery #cocrodile #mummy #mummifiedanimals #mummifiedcocrodile #sobek #ancienthistory #skull #jaws #emergingfromthesand #desert #lookingdangerintheeye #photography #archaeologicalphotography #nikon #nikond750 #throughthelens #nationalgeographic #windfallfilms

Happy World Photography Day! 📷☺️ On this day I wanted to share with you what is probably my favourite picture of "me in action" and thank all the teams that I currently work with (@qubbetelhawa , @thebanproject , Elephantine Project with @dai_cairo and the Swiss Institut in Cairo ), or have worked with in the past (@kuleuven -Egyptology, PAMES - Proyecto Arqueológico Medio Eufrates Sirio, Monthemhat Project (TT34)), to have given me the opportunity to work with them, learn with them, and let me grow personally and professionally with them during the last 14 years. Challenging my photographical skills in Qubbet el-Hawa, Elephantine, Deir el-Bahari & Asasif, Deir el-Barsha, and Deir ez-Zor is such a privilege, and I feel so lucky to have this job for a living! Here’s to more photos with -and for- you! 📷: working in one of the First Intermediate Period burials at Tod's Cemetery in Deir el-Barsha, by Kylie Cortebeeck (2017, @kuleuven - Egyptology). #worldphotographyday #worldphotography #photography #photographylovers #archaeologicalphotography #archaeologicalphotographer #egypt #ancientegypt #egyptology #archaeology #inthefield #photographerinaction #nikon #nikonphotographer #nikonistas #egyptiantomb #ancientburial #skeleton #bones #skull #humanremains #ancient #desert #photographyislife #lifeofaphotographer #privilegedjob #science #adventure #challenge #iamtheonewhocallstheshots 😉

Need a hand? 😉 in the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa, contrary to what one might think, there are not many mummified remains preserved. Most of the ancient burials found by the team of the Spanish team contained the skeletons of the individuals buried there, rather than their corpses mummified. In this picture you can see two unusual (in the site) mummified hands from tomb QH32, hold by one of the anthropologist of the team, PhD Candidate Rosario Guimarey. We can still appreciate the skin on most of the hand of this ancient individual, plus remains of the linen cloth with which its body was wrapped when the mummification ritual was done on him, more than three thousand years ago. Here’s a #throwbackpic of Mahmoud Abu Marh working in the area in front of tomb QH34aa. The views of the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa are truly astonishing! However is not the Nile or working in such a privileged archaeological site what I miss the most, but the awesome team and the amazing Nubian family that awaits us there next season (hopefully happening soon). @qubbetelhawa, UJA, season 2019. #proyectoqubbetelhawa #qubbetelhawa #uja #aswan #egyptiannecropolis #ancientegypt #archaeology #archaeologist #inthefield #wedigancienthistory #lovingarchaeology #diggingthepast #egyptology #science #adventure #archaeologyisfamily #nubian #archaeologicalphotography #archaeologicalphotographer #nikon #nikond750 #lifeofaphotographer #photographerinthefield #desert #nile #nileriver #astonishinglandscape
