Winchester Cathedral
My wedding is going to be in Winchester Cathedral.

A couple of small obstacles: no one to marry yet and one of us has to have a close connection with the cathedral, so I’ll have to start cultivating that properly when the plague is over.

She’s very beautiful. The west end is soaring Perpendicular Gothic but roundabout the transepts, the money ran out and it turns back to glorious chunky Norman. Alfred the Great was buried here (well, in the grounds, when this was the Old Minster). King Cnut, Emma of Normandy, Harthacnut and William Rufus are all jumbled up in the mortuary chests to this day, along with six kings of Wessex. Henry IV and Bloody Mary got married here (not to each other). I love this place.

I did a bit of birdspotting on today’s walk and managed to spot seven out of the eight birds on the RSPB’s winter bingo list. Most of the pictures were taken today but the robin here was actually taken two weeks ago because I knew I’d never better that picture. I don’t have a photo of a crow but I have seen plenty and I haven’t spotted a green woodpecker. So, in order: starling, great tit, robin, grey heron, blue tit, wood pigeon, bonus little egret which wasn’t on the list. iamapolarbear.com #birds #rspb #twitching #nature #rspb #brilliantbirds #birdwatching #birdwatch

Tonight at Guides we made lemonade scones. I don’t have a great history with scones. If I’m in the same room as someone else baking them, that’s enough to make them as thin and heavy as a 2p piece. But these worked ok, except I pressed them out a bit thin and should have used the big cutter instead of the medium one. Scroll for a hideously unflattering picture of me sitting on the floor watching the scones bake in the oven. I think the recipe is from Good Housekeeping. It goes as follows: Mix 400g self raising flour, 175ml double cream & 175ml lemonade in a bowl until you get a sticky dough. With your hands, press the dough out on a floured surface until it’s 2cm thick. Cut out scones, put on a tray on baking parchment and bake for 12-15mins. Very simple. iamapolarbear.com #baking #scones #lemonadescones #recipe #food #girlguiding #guides #zoomactivities

Adelboden, Switzerland
I wanted a picture of me in my Guide uniform for this and a background of Switzerland is much prettier than the attempts at selfies in lightbulb light before Brownies this evening.

On Thursday, my boss told me that his niece would be working with us for a couple of weeks. She'd be doing some database cleaning and updating and as the databases are my babies, he wanted *me* to manage her.

My initial reaction was "Me? No way. I'm not a manager. I can't manage people or talk to people. I'm a behind-the-scenes person. I can't manage someone!". Out loud, of course, I said "Ok… I can do that…". But then he talked through it and through the work she'd be doing and over the course of the conversation, I gradually realised that I *can* be a manager. I've done it before. How long have I been a unit leader of a Ranger, Guide or Brownie unit? I've managed the other leaders. I've managed the Young Leaders. I've managed them through leadership qualifications and day-to-day activities. This was just a Young Leader without a uniform and we'd be dealing with data instead of children.

It helped that she's only nineteen and looks like a Young Leader. She's very nice and very keen and my leadership approach is fairly hands-on and approachable, so she's been quite happy to call me any time she's got a problem or message me any time she's got a question. I'm finding new issues in this new context - managing someone on their first day, not completely panicking at the prospect, not over- or micro-managing her and also getting on with my own work - but who'd have thought, I'm capable of being a manager after all.

Another weekend, another walk. I’ve added 22.94km to my targets this weekend - the Strava January walk challenge which is 100km and my Virtual Runner 1000km in 2021 challenge. I got the 500km last year but I think I can double it with very little trouble.

Today’s walk ended up down by the river. I’ve never seen it from this side before and never been under the main road. Even after ten months of daily walks, 95% of which have started from my front door, I’m still discovering new places right on my doorstep. Great weather for discovering it too.

Tarrant Rushton Airfield

Juliet

Today’s walk was around Tarrant Rushton Airfield, which by total coincidence was the subject of yesterday’s new blog post. Go to the link in my bio to read more. Tarrant Rushton Airfield is a WWII station turned flight refuelling/glider experiment centre turned farmland. In the 40s, Halifaxes dropped supplies to the French Resistance and then towed gliders - in fact, the first Allied troops to (crash-) land in France on D Day set off from here. Lucky farmer, nice big barn, you might think. That’s an aircraft hanger. There were four in the war and now there’s one oversized barn and one sawmill. The main runway is... well, not intact but still visible. The other two are long gone, although their ghosts are visible on Google Maps. Today we found shreds of evidence of one of them, backed up by compass bearings on the surviving hangars. We also met a shy dog who couldn’t be coaxed with a biscuit from the owner and a very un-shy dog who “has to say hello to everyone”. iamapolarbear.com #tarrantrushtonairfield #dorset #militaryhistory #wwii #airfield #raf #dailywalk #blogpost #january2020

Another year abroad: we went to Zermatt in November in woefully inadequate clothing, took a gondola up to 2552m, which was only -9° (we’d decided the -21° ice palace was a bit chilly). This was the day I bought my first pair of polarised sunglasses and I’d never go back. We finished our day with fondue - the only time we had it in nearly ten months of living in Switzerland. Well, actually we finished the day at the arcade in Lausanne but that’s not as picturesque as an alpine village in the snow after dark. iamapolarbear.com #travel #switzerland #zermatt #matterhorn #mountains #alps #snow #winter #yearabroad #myyearabroadalongtimeago #november2005

Paris, France

Juliet

Three years ago (which hardly feels like one), I went to Paris on just over a week’s notice because it was cheaper to fly to Paris from Southampton than take the train from there to London and also quicker. Paris so soon after Christmas was very cold but also quieter than usual. I went up the Eiffel Tower because for once, at 8pm when it was really freezing, there wasn’t too much queue. I also went up the Arc de Triomphe, which my year 10 French exchange booklet said I did in June 2000 but which I didn’t remember at all. I will never love Paris like I love London (or Tromsø or Helsinki or Rīga or Tallinn or Moscow... actually, Paris is a long way down my list) but on this short trip, we learned to be matey and I would go back. Except Flybe collapsed before we even got to lockdown and that makes quick cheap flights a lot slower and more expensive. iamapolarbear.com #travel #paris #eiffeltower #france #january2018 #citybreak #winter #winterinparis #freezing

Laugarvatn Fontana

Juliet

I saw a picture from Fontana on here earlier and it’s not like I have much else to post. This is summer 2016, the scrapbook summer, when I drove around Iceland with a little leather journal and an instant camera and kept a record of everything I saw and did. Fontana is unusual in that it lets you take your camera in with you, so I balanced mine (in its waterproof case) on the water feature in the second picture and took a selfie in Sæla, the long shallow pool. In 2021, I might have retaken it without the sauna-seeking Icelanders in the background. The sauna is heated by natural vents in the ground directly underneath so it’s very hot, very steamy and absolutely stinks of sulphur. The pools are heated spring water and they smell fine. iamapolarbear.com #selfie #pool #spa #iceland #laugarvatn #travel #laugarvatnfontana #water #summer2016

As I was out on my walk tonight, my vision turned to glitter. That’s usually a sign I’m about to pass out but I couldn’t figure out why. It’s not something I’ve done in at least ten years and never without good reason. But it wasn’t my vision. The light mist that’s been hanging around all day had frozen and was catching the street lights. So the streets and plants became gently dusted in mist-glitter and my nose got very cold.

Adelboden, Switzerland
On this day last year, I scrambled through some snow to sit on an icy rock and put my bare feet in a glacial river so I could get a badge. Well, there was a lot more to it than that. It took the entire week to finish that badge. Plenty of people apparently don’t get the Our Chalet Challenge badge because they don’t think to look at it until the last night and then it’s too late, so it feels like quite an achievement to have it on my blanket.

I’ve neglected Guiding since the plague set in. I sent activities out by email but got no response so I let it be but now it’s been ten months and I’m going to have to get brave and start Zoom meetings, just like everyone else has. It’s been a huge part of my life and it disturbs me so much that I haven’t kept it up this year that I can’t even bring myself to wear my big soft lovely Our Chalet hoodie.

Guess I’d better find them a badge to do.

S’pose I should do an end of 2020 roundup then. It’s not been great, has it?

🏔JANUARY🏔
I started 2020 in Switzerland, with some orienteering, papercutting and a long walk down the valley to the woodcarver’s. Got in a trip to London and two cathedrals.

💨FEBRUARY💨
Winter camp in Storm Ciara, Thinking Day at Pax Lodge and my First Aid refresher got cancelled for the first time.

⛪️MARCH⛪️
Had a weekend in Oxford although the band I was there to see cancelled 24 hours before it started. Lockdown! Blue hair that turned out green!

💻APRIL💻
Lockdown, furlough, working from home and camping in the garden

👩‍🎤MAY👩‍🎤
Pink hair. Still working from home & still furloughed. Started walking 2km every. single. day. Still not missed a day. First Aid update cancelled for the second time.

🌞JUNE🌞
Still furloughed, still working from home but now it’s really hot.

🏄‍♀️JULY🏄‍♀️
Off furlough at last. Lockdown’s kind of finished. Dyed my hair purple, social distanced on a paddleboard in the middle of a lake on a grey day

🖥AUGUST🖥
Still hot. Still not doing much except daily walks & working from home. Outdoor pool is open so I swim twice a week.

🚶‍♀️SEPTEMBER🚶‍♀️
I got in a weekend camping on Dartmoor! Pool closes for the season. First Aid update cancelled for the third time.

🚣‍♀️OCTOBER🚣‍♀️
Exciting month - I paddled a canoe down a river, visited a castle and got promoted at work! First Aid theory updated over Zoom.

🔒NOVEMBER🔒
Back to lockdown but with a glass fusing workshop squeezed in

⛺️DECEMBER ⛺️
Went glamping just down the road, went to the beach with @velvetbarnacle and to the cliffs with @sootybear84, saw lots of Christmas lights and dyed my hair red. Seeing in 2021 in a glittery blue bath.

Last night I went for a ride on #TheWatercressLine for their Steam Illuminations - a steam-hauled Christmas train covered in thousands of colour-changing LEDs. On first glance, it looks like they’re draped in hanging/snowflake B&Q lights, until you realise all 130ish metres of train is lighting up in sequence, both along its length and down from the roof, up to & including the loco. There are more lights inside, matching what’s going on outside *and* you have a wristband that lights up to match as well. It’s incredible.

Longleat

Juliet

I went to Longleat’s Land of Light yesterday. I go to the Festival of Lights most year but because of the obvious, it’s not on this year, so they’ve replaced it with a 2km trail of light and music, including this purple, pink & blue musical wall, holographic whales over the lake, a jungle full of bugs, a tunnel of 90s neon chaos and a laser show in the Longhouse. You wear a mask and it’s all timed tickets and limited numbers so there’s plenty of distancing, as long as the gormless people actually think about distancing and wear their masks properly. I did a lot of glaring over the top of mine, a nice red and gold Christmassy one I made on Friday after accepting that my first Christmas mask was just too big. The inside is big cartoon Santas but I prefer the red and gold snowflakes. Top tip: the Garden of Hearts is great selfie lighting. I’m going back again in January. iamapolarbear.com #longleat @longleatofficial #landoflight #lights #christmaslights #night #selfie #lighttrails
