What distance to zero a rds pistol at? The two most common are 10 yards or 25 yards. I’m not going to say THIS one is right or THIS one is wrong. Right is knowing what your zero is, why you zeroed at that distance and what your hold overs are. That being said, we use a 25 yard zero. During our two day instructor course, we will undoubtedly have a couple shooters show up with a 10 yard zero. We encourage them to keep that zero while we go through the class. After a day or two, re-evaluate. If you still like that zero, keep it. If you don’t, change it. Almost every single shooter who has shown up with a 10 yard zero has changed it. Arguments can be made that a 25 yard zero is a hard zero to accurately obtain. Things can be done to mitigate those issues. Nonetheless, doing a 10 yard zero doesn’t fix your 25 yard accuracy. Another argument is that it is faster and quicker to get a 10 yard zero (why some instructors prefer that) Yes it is. And if time is of the essence then it’s better then nothing. However, you should be confirming at 25. Do what is right for you. For LEOs, I encourage a 25 yard zero because 25 yards is a very realistic scenario. Grocery store aisle cap to aisle cap is around 27 yards. Fleeing felon from a vehicle quickly becomes 25 yards. UPDATE WITH CLARIFICATION: The first photo is from a 25 yard zero shot at 25 yards. The second photo is a 10 yard zero shot at 25 yards. We have seen these groupings every single class. May not look like much, but during an HRT shot (like the Stockton PD video floating around), it’s the difference between life and death. If it’s a close contact shot, all you have to account for is the mechanical offset which is around .8-1.2 inches Talking about rds zeros are like insulting someone’s mama if you disagree (idk why). Do optics fail? Yes. Do iron sights fail? Yes. There are options out there to help mitigate failure with optics. That begins with the initial mill cut and mount. You have two options: 1. Buy a factory cut slide (Glock MOS, S&W CORE etc). Depending on the optic you want to run, you will have to buy an adaptor plate. Adding an adaptor plate (vs. a direct mount), gives you another point of potential failure. Also, it’s not a custom fit to the optic. Lastly, it sits higher on the slide which causes issues with your draw, mechanical offset and finding taller suppressor sights. 2. Getting your slide cut/milled from a REPUTABLE company. The video shows you the benefits of getting a quality slide cut. Another point I failed to mention is that it’ll help maintain the integrity of your zero. Picked up another 507k for a 43x. The 32 moa circle is a great option to utilize on a smaller optic window where it is inherently “harder” to pick up the dot. Additionally, the gun is primarily a CCW type of gun, so the larger reticle shouldn’t impair the intended use of the gun. Whatever the reason is that you train (competition, self-defense, hobbyist, hunter, work related, etc.) remember why you train and what is at stake if you lack training. Don’t get complacent and unmotivated by not setting goals and benchmarks for yourself. At the same time, try out something new. There is a ton of different avenues to training firearms to keep you motivated and widen your knowledge. To often we get stuck on that “flat range” running the same drills that work the same skillset. Additionally, they all intertwine. You can benefit competition shooting by hunting and better your self-defense capabilities by shooting competition. It will take you to some amazing places mentally and physically. It doesn’t matter how much you train on that range and what complex scenarios you create, you will never be able to recreate the adrenal rush that you have to suppress when you have a big game animal in your crosshairs and precision accuracy is the only thing that will create success in the shot. After the shot breaks, your body will physically shake letting the adrenal pass. It’s a learned and trained skill. When was the last time you had that reaction on your flat range. I could create a scenario for every avenue of shooting that will help you. Stay motivated by staying hungry and being hard. •IFAK• Individual First Aid Kit: If you are on a range, you need to equip yourself with an IFAK. Supplies like tourniquets, combat gauze/quick clot, chest seals and pressure bandages. A study conducted during OIF and OEF in the early stages of the war found that almost 8% of casualties could have been prevented with an IFAK. Domestically, during the Boston Marathon bombing, over 27 TQs were applied prehospital. HOWEVER, carrying an ifak is not enough. You need to know what you have, how to quickly access it and how to utilize the contents. We carry guns to save life’s. Ending the threat with force is only 50% of the equation.
