Sometimes photographic opportunities materialize when you least expect them. This shot of a black oyster mushroom is a good example (it's actually a focus stack of 15 separate images). My daughter was cooking up a batch of recipes included with our wonderful @siena_farms (Sudbury, MA) summer CSA. (Each Siena Farms CSA box includes tasty ideas for using the vegetables, some of which I've never heard of). I couldn't help but notice several very intriguing mushrooms on the cutting board. I quickly popped one of these natural engineering marvels into my light box before it hit the sauté pan (the photo shoot was sanctioned by the chef). Scrumptious to photograph, even more delicious to eat!

"Imagining St. Elmo's Fire (while taking a lot of artistic liberties)"

There’s been intense lightning activity in the Boston area lately—maybe that’s what inspired this reworking of a photo that I took a couple of years ago in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The glow is how I envision St. Elmo's fire, named after the patron saint of sailors, Erasmus of Formia (aka, “St. Elmo”). The "fire" is luminous plasma (typically, blue or violet) that forms around ship masts and spires due to electrical fields that can form before lightning strikes. I'd love to see this stuff in person!

“Roswell (Maybe) Revisited” UFOs have made the headlines lately. Here's the really big news, though: I think I know where the alien crews are hanging out when they're not flying -- at least, in my mind's eye! There is, however, an alternative explanation for this amped-up image, retooled for my stone portal (swipe to see pre-portal art). Always go for the simplest, which is that Bill Hecht's transistor radio robots have escaped from @the_robotorium lab and have set up shop near Roswell. If so, it appears that they're having a rocking good time in there! #UFOs #area51 #visualartist #photopainting #ET #Roswell #surreal #surrealart #surrealism #surrealphotography #abandonedbuildings #deathvalley #flyingsaucers #martians #spacesliens #ghosttown #outerspace

More rain in the northeastern US--we still need a boat. This one's a bit different from yesterday's post. I'm in a more contemplative mood, too--an older photo from Boothbay Harbor, Maine, retooled for my wooden frame portal, fit the bill. How does this foggy morning image work for you?

Craved two things on this dreary, rain-drenched weekend: a treat of color and an ark. This redo of an older image (cargo ship in Reykjavik, Iceland + Utah full moon) solved both problems. Hope you have a luminous 4th of July!

“On Display at Verum Ultimum”

"Arrival" was chosen to be part of Verum Ultimum's online "Liminal" show. The piece is a composite of multiple images photographed at airports. Here's my description:

"Arrival at an airport is a transitional act. Passengers arrive only to travel again by foot, tram, or people mover to reach another destination--ground transportation. The experience is one of being betwixt and between."

This terrific show runs from July 1 through August 1, 2021. See link in my linktr.ee. Many thanks to @verumultimum!

“Pop or not? A couple of weeks ago, I was bicycling down a recently striped road. I couldn't help but notice that the striping machine had apparently malfunctioned. Instead of laying down relatively clean edges at the end of each stripe, the machine had left misshapen paint splatters. On further investigation, I noticed that the trailing edges of the stripes were irregular, making them as different as snowflakes. I took a few shots with my trusty Fuji x100T (small enough to fit into a fanny back and always with me). They were interesting and warranted a return trip with a tripod and full-frame camera. The road was closed to cars that day, so I was able to safely photograph dozens of the paint stripes at a leisurely pace. My intent was to organize the stripes into various patterns and apply neon colors to them for a "pop" look. I'd start off using secondary complementary colors: violent, orange, and green. After all that, not sure if I prefer the colorful or stark black-and-white (swipe to view) look. What do you think of the concept -- to go pop or not? In any case, let's hear it for the artistic potential of a broken machine! #roadwork #roadstriping #popart #popartstyle #warhol #andywarhol #neon #secondarycolors #complimentarycolors #complementarycolors #violet #orange #green #neonviolet #neonorange #neonorange

“A Bees’ Knees Weekend”

Here's Tom the beekeeper after he finished corralling more than 30,000 European honeybees that visited our yard yesterday. The bees appeared mid-morning next to our house after leaving their hive (a queen sometimes takes off when the hive gets too large, and half of her loyal subjects follow). At first, I thought that our windows really needed cleaning until I noticed that the "dirt" was moving. And thrumming. The swarm was three stories tall until the bees suddenly coalesced onto a branch and formed a protective cone about 30 inches deep around her majesty. Meanwhile, scouts flew far and wide to find a new location for a hive.

We contacted Tom, who came right over, donned protective gear, climbed a ladder, and proceeded to gently nudge handfuls of bees into a bucket before transferring them to a portable hive. It took him a couple of hours to achieve his goal: snag the queen, so the others would follow her pheromone trail into the hive. Which is exactly what happened.

As Tom went about his work, he explained bee behavior and then told me something amazing: for him, beekeeping is a form of meditation. He must be calm, because if he's on edge, the bees will be edgy and stressed, too.

In the end this was a great triple win: The bees didn't wind up building a nest in an attic or other structure, which would not have ended well for them. Tom acquired a good supply of honey bees, which have been hard to come by during the pandemic. And our backyard is free of non-native pollinators. Oh, and there's a fourth--in a couple of months we’ll get a container of free honey, courtesy of Tom and our brief guests. We'll save it for special occasions.

Now about that meditation element of beekeeping…I really like the idea.

“Flights of the Imagination, Revised”

I started retooling an older print that I thought would make a good inset for the wooden portal. It's a mashup of an Icelandic glacier and the Panamint Range in Death Valley, laced with a flock of swarming birds that I photographed in Kalamzoo, Michigan. When I finished cropping, toning, and sharpening the image so it would work well in the frame, however, I decided that the piece was meant to be a standalone. The birds need to freely fly into and out of the imaginary space--the frame would have constrained the flight as well as the rhythm and flow of the land forms.

Hope this post sets the mood for a contemplative Friday and a magical weekend!

Sometimes intriguing still life subjects are hiding in plain sight. Like this section of retaining wall that runs along my driveway. I always liked the rhythm and flow of the knot hole, but it was the sudden appearance of this burst of foliage that compelled me to break out my macro photography gear. I liked the juxtaposition of new life within dead matter, and new life vs the weathered spike head. Lots of contrasts here, literally and metaphorically. Anyway, this seemed like an apropos use of the rough wooden portal. Where does your eye go first?

Yesterday's soaking rain was welcome here in the northeast--we needed it. I also needed a break from the portals, and the constant pinging on the skylights was a reminder of all the web drop images I have sitting in my "to be processed/reprocessed" folder. Like this one. I took it before I started focus stacking such photographs for greater depth, but I like the fact that the deeper elements are gauzy--I believe it adds a sense of mystery. What do you think of the toning and composition?
